Request

Is the council aware if the Borough will be housing migrants/ asylum seekers, like Crowborough has been forced to do?

Response

Is the council aware if the Borough will be housing migrants/ asylum seekers, like Crowborough has been forced to do?

The Council is not directly involved in housing of asylum seekers, this is the responsibility of the Home Office and their contract accommodation providers. An Asylum dispersal system was established under the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, designed to distribute responsibility for housing asylum seekers across the UK so that no single area is overburdened. The Home Office introduced a policy of "Full Dispersal" in April 2022, expanding participation so that all local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales accommodate asylum seekers.
